Have a Compaq Presario Notebook PC. My Smart Audio 221 driver needs upgraded. I went into Hewlett Packard downloads and tried to download the Conexant High Definition Smart Audio 221 Driver, released 9-25-2009,version 4.98.4.60 Rev. A. I got an error message that the Installation failed because it could not find the device for this driver. I can see it in my device manager, and the device manager tells me that Conexant Smart Audio 221 driver is working perfectly. It is however causing problems with loading a Powero2Go program, so I need the upgrade. I don't know why I cannot download it, but I tried to contact Hewlett Packard. You can't talk to a tech unless your computer is still under warranty - mine is 3 years old. I will put in on the forum and hope someone will discuss/provide solution. Owner Babe

Hi:

Try updating the driver manually. The driver you downloaded extracted to a file on your C: drive named SWSETUP. In that folder is another folder with the package number of the driver you downloaded (spxxxxx).

Click on your audio controller in the device manager, click on the driver tab click on update driver. Select the manual method and browse to that folder and see if the driver will load that way.

Thanks, Paul. Followed your steps and attempted to download the driver. I got an message that the most up-to-date drive was installed on my computer. Still the device manager details shows the original in 2008 date and does not note an upgrade. Owner Babe

Hi:

Sorry that didn't work. The only other thing you can try is to uninstall the driver in the device manager and then try to install the latest one the same way as you just tried.

The only thing is if that doesn't work you may not have any sound. So, you can leave well enough alone or experiment and take the risk.

Other than that, I don't have any other suggestions for you to try, I'm afraid.

Thanks again, Paul. I am about ready to uninstall it. I have been trying to install the Power2Go upgrade for at least a month and it won't install right because of some glitch in the system. I have done a lot of driver updates. Working with techs at Cyberlink; they think my drivers are old as mentioned before-the reason for trying to install this Smart Audio 221 upgrade. If I have to uninstall and reinstall the driver, I will do it. Thanks for your help.
