Joined: August 6, 2012 Posts: 41Reputation:0Reputation Power: 1 | Here is a pic of my Columbia Blue Dot. Is this ball the old style with a hardness rating approaching 90, or one of the newer ones that are around the low 80s? What do you guys think? -Pat _________________ Revs: 300 MPH: 21.00 (at foulline until 15 feet down lane) Axis Tilt: 13.5in -- 0 degrees Track: Very High Tweener Right Handed, all current equipment is 15lb.

I believe the date code on it is December of 2000. I guess it could be Dec 1980, or Dec 1990. I know I got it in 2000, but don't remember the circumstances of my ball driller getting it into stock (if he already had it stored, or he ordered it). -Pat _________________ Revs: 300 MPH: 21.00 (at foulline until 15 feet down lane) Axis Tilt: 13.5in -- 0 degrees Track: Very High Tweener Right Handed, all current equipment is 15lb.

You posted this message right when I was replying. So, in 1980, those were the high 80s/low 90s durometer readings, weren't they? -Pat _________________ Revs: 300 MPH: 21.00 (at foulline until 15 feet down lane) Axis Tilt: 13.5in -- 0 degrees Track: Very High Tweener Right Handed, all current equipment is 15lb.

Columbia started with year then P (I believe) to start production runs from the mid-seventies and changed to year, A, beginning 1981. I took a good look at the photo and I see the 'yellow' starting to come out.I still have a 16lb silver '75 White Dot undrilled that's really changed color over the years. If my memory is correct my '78 punched 88-89. The surprising thing was that it hooked more than my White Dot and, almost as much as my '77 Yellow Dot on light oil. I don't know that it will still be that hard today. Both my Yellow Dot and Violet White Dot have softened through age. The Yellow Dot punches 70-72 and the White Dot is around 73-74.

By the look of the serial number and the other identifying marks it looks like a 1990 Blue Dot. The 0Z serial number, If it's a 9Z than 1999. The old ones have a very light blue dot, the newer ones have a darker blue dot. I have one from 1987 I believe, that has the very light blue dot. In my opinion you can tell by the way the silver is swirled and the appearance of the cover stock. The older ones have a much more silver pearl look to them vs the newer ones that look more white pearl. The newer ones just look different than the older ones. Lastly you can look inside the holes at the inner material. The inner material is different in the old blue dots vs the newer ones. This is something you would have to know what you are seeing to spot. Newer also has larger engraving for the Columbia 300 Never ones also have MADE IN USA under the Columbia logo If I get a chance I will post a picture of my old Blue Dot vs. a newer Blue Dot I also have here. The ball on the left (OLD) is the serial number 7R and the ball on the right (NEWER) is 1X [/url]

Not necessary for my purpose, but go for it if you're itchin to know. I think I'm going to replace mine with a Storm Ice Storm. It's the hardest ball on the market today (85-87). Thanks guys for your comments! -Pat _________________ Revs: 300 MPH: 21.00 (at foulline until 15 feet down lane) Axis Tilt: 13.5in -- 0 degrees Track: Very High Tweener Right Handed, all current equipment is 15lb.

I've been out of bowling for 20 years, and have just recently returned. All the new terminology, and having the internet to gain knowledge is amazing to me sometimes. -Pat _________________ Revs: 300 MPH: 21.00 (at foulline until 15 feet down lane) Axis Tilt: 13.5in -- 0 degrees Track: Very High Tweener Right Handed, all current equipment is 15lb.
