Inspiron 1521 Laptop comes with two chipsets:
1. Intel's GM965 / PM965 chipset
2. AMD(TM) M690T chipset with ATI(TM) Radeon® X1270 Graphics
I can try finding the Base System Device Driver (Chipset Driver) for you system, please reply with the chipset present in your computer. Also, this will help me find the Audio drivers for your computer.

The information that you have provided indicates your computer has AMD(TM) M690T chipset with ATI(TM) Radeon® X1270 Graphics. I have checked the AMD website but there was no chipset driver available for this. I would request you to provide me the device Instance ID of the 'Base System Device' and the 'Audio Card' so that I can try finding other sources. To get the Device Instance ID:
1. Right click Computer icon on the Desktop.
2. Select Manage.
3. Select Device Manager under Computer Management from the left pane.
4. Then expand the 'Other devices' from right pane.
5. Right click the Device listed.
6. Click Properties.
7. Go to the Details tab, and then select Device Instance Id from the drop down list.
8. This will get you the Device Instance ID for the 'Base System Device'
9. Make a note of this Device Instance ID.
10. Repeat steps 4 through 9 for 'Sound, video and game controllers'.
11. This will get you the Device Instance ID for the Audio Card.

Wow, I'm really grateful you're taking the time to help me out. Thank you!
OK, you're right on about the chip sets. A year or two back, I went to ATI to check for updates. It took some prodding, but finally was informed that DELL was the only source for updating ATI products in Dell Laptops. I still have the same install that came with my laptop, EXCEPT this laptop came installed w/ VISTA Pro/32-bit/2 GB RAM/140 GB HDD.
I've since upgraded to Win 7 Ultimate/64-bit/4 GB RAM/120 GB SSD. I Can't seem to break through the barrier on Dell's website because they won't let me put my specs in my present laptop even when I allow them to scan my laptop, it (they/Dell) shows my current specs, but still refers me to the drivers page for the original VISTA configuration. Their is probably a way in, but I haven't figured it out yet.
My audio/microphone is still not working, headset headphones are working, but the device mgr. won't allow me to override the default MS HD Audio drivers with Realtecs HD AC'97 drivers. I had the same problem with my desktop, but was able to install Realtecs drivers there and all of my audio is now working.
Sorry I'm dragging this out, but going to Device Mgr to get the device instance ID for both Base System Device and Audio Device. I couldn't find on either that exact wording. The closest I could come was Device Instance Path & a few more descriptions with the Device word, but nothing close to Device Instance ID.
This is alot to deal with. Wouldn't blame you for blowing it all off. I have tried many ways, many days on this. Want to give up myself, but not there yet.
Again, thank you for any & all time you've spent. I'll keep trying & if I come up w/ anything, I'll let you know.

Thank you for writing in detail. This computer was originally shipped with one of the following Operating Systems:
1. Microsoft® Windows Vista(TM) Home Basic (32-bit)
2. Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)
3. Microsoft Windows Vista Business (32-bit)
4. Red Flag Linux®
5. Free DOS(TM)
So our website has drivers for above mentioned Windows Operating Systems and Windows XP only. For Linux or other Windows Operating Systems we must get the drivers from other sources. Please reply with the Device Instance Path and I will give it a try.

Issues have been solved. On Dell's driver download page, I had not looked deep enough. I dissected the driver download page and was able to find The 64 bit drivers for both the System Base Device and my Audio Device. Both issues have been resolved.
Again, Thank You for your time spent. I learned a few new things on this little adventure. Your questions of me helped me learn to dig a little deeper, deal w/ some frustrations and find solutions.

Vmware Base System Device Driver Download

Get the drivers from the device mftrs.' websites. This means looking at whoever makes the webcam and you probably need sound card drivers. Logitech doesn't make your sound card. After you install an operating system you need to install drivers for all your hardware. There is no reason to assume the operating system will include drivers and therefore install them automatically. Win7 does have a lot of drivers which were supplied by the hardware mftrs. to Microsoft for inclusion in the operating system, but there is no guarantee it will have drivers for yourhardware.
General information about getting drivers:
Get them from:
1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).
Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.
To find out what hardware is in your computer:
1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc Advisor or System Information for Windows.
